Why Black Mountain Montessori?

Individualized Education & Joyful Learning

Black Mountain Montessori school follows the child-centered educational approach of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952).  She was the first female physician to graduate from the University of Rome, as well as a teacher, philosopher and anthropologist.  The Montessori method of education is very respected around the world and has been used for over 100 years. The method is directed at helping each child reach their full potential in all areas of life.  In addition to intellectual growth, it promotes the development of social skills, emotional maturity, physical coordination, and independence.

We understand that children learn more by touching, seeing, smelling, tasting and exploring.  They learn through movement and direct experience— not by just listening.  Unlike traditional schools, lessons at Black Mountain Montessori are tailored to each child’s ability and learning style.  Additionally, we have multi-age classrooms (typically a 3-year span), allowing students to comfortably work at their own pace with encouragement and guidance of teachers and peers.  Offering an individualized approach rather than a standardized one builds confidence in students, contributing to a more enjoyable and successful school experience.

The Montessori method envisions education as “an aid to life” and celebrates each child as a unique individual.  The approach inspires children to discover the joy of learning at an early age and encourages students to start taking responsibility for their own education.  The most important thing you’ll notice in our classrooms is that children are happy and focused, driven by their own interests and curiosity.  Students develop an appreciation for life, the world, and the universe.  By design, the Montessori method and curriculum fosters capable, self-assured and compassionate individuals who strive for a more harmonious society.  We are proud to provide a framework in which intellectual and social discipline goes hand in hand— laying the foundation for a happy, productive life.
